Starring: Tyler Perry, Kathy Bates, Sanaa Lathan, KaDee Strickland, Taraji P. Henson, Alfre Woodard, Rockmond Dunbar, Ron Clinton Smith,
Damien Leake, Jeff Rose
Tyler Perry’s latest is a soap opera in denial. It comes complete with all the mid-afternoon melodrama trappings: Sniveling caricatures of rich people, cheap marital affairs, fighting families, and a score composed mainly of generic piano music. By all rights The Family The Preys should be the worst movie of the year, but it lands more in the merely bad bin, thanks to great performances from Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard; and that warm, gooey glow that seems to follow Tyler Perry around wherever he goes.
It’s the meandering story of two families, joined at the hip by the unlikely friendship of their matriarchs. Charlotte (Bates) and Alice (Woodard) have been friends for thirty years, though they come from very different worlds. Charlotte is a rich, corporate tycoon and Alice runs a humble diner in the shady part of town. Alice is reserved and god fearing, while Charlotte seems almost to suffer from a split personality disorder. When she’s with Alice she’s a freewheeling, kind, and generous woman. Whenever we see her without her friend, she’s a horrible rich bitch, ripped straight off the set of Dallas or Falcon Crest. I’m sure when Perry wrote his script it was his intention to show the good effect that Alice has on her pal, but the contrast in Charlotte’s behavior is so extreme that it feels like Bates is playing two completely separate characters. Maybe the rich bitch version is her evil twin.
Luckily, most of the time when we see Charlotte she’s hanging out with Alice. Together, Bates and Woodard have fantastic chemistry, and any time they’re on screen, you forget the rest of the garbage that composes this movie and simply settle in to watch them dispense wisdom about living life. Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, their story is not the only thing going on in this film. In fact it’s more of a side trip. The real story here is a ludicrous bunch of corporate maneuvering and bed hopping involving their children, who range in mawkish caricature from sassy black girl to rich, white, corporate tool.
Alice’s daughter Andrea (Sanaa Lathan) is cheating on her husband with Charlotte’s son and her boss William (Cole Hauser), the aforementioned rich corporate tool. Andrea’s husband Chris (Rockmund Dunbar), is literally the most clueless man on the face of the earth, and we follow him around as he’s given every indication under the sun that his wife his cheating on him, only to watch him shake his head in bewildered but polite confusion after every revelation, wandering out of frame as in the dark as he was before he walked on camera. It becomes an unintentional running gag throughout the movie. Chris is confronted with indications that his wife is cheating, he’s so stupid that he doesn’t get it; wash, rinse, repeat.
Meanwhile, there’s a bunch of corporate muckity muck going on between Charlotte and her son. Robin Givens shows up… for some reason and gets involved with that. Rich people sit in conference rooms sniveling at each other, as if Perry learned everything he knows about corporate finance from watching and re-watching Robocop. It’s utterly laughable and all you can really do is sit through it and hope that Perry’s script gets back to the story of Charlotte and Alice’s friendship, before you roll your eyes right out of your head.
Bad as this script is, it’s easy to see what it is about Tyler Perry himself that people find so appealing. There’s genuine warmth in those moments between Bates and Woodard, meanwhile Perry doesn’t do so bad himself in a minor role as the husband of one of Woodard’s daughters. His character is one of the few in the film that comes off as a real person, he energizes everything whenever he’s on screen. You’ll want to give him a hug. Tyler Perry has something, there’s no doubt. But in The Family That Preys, it’s buried under by an avalanche of unbearable, soap opera drivel.

I just saw this film a few hours ago. I thought it was one of Perry's best. Acting, directing and cinematography was right on point. Definetly got my money's worth.
Why all the hate? I think tyler perry in this movie has show his growth and development in the movie industry. He takes real stories that happen everyday and displays them on the screena nd people seen to hate because he is not telling us what to like he is literally taking the sugestions of the public. This a story no one really wants to tell from the full prospective. When this story has been told before usually the black character is a maid int he white womans house and has been treated like a dog but still shows compassion. The rockman dumbar character was so blinded by the ove he had for his woman and the love he thought she had for him that he didn't wanna see it or even admit it. I mean isn't that possible? Oh yeah I forgot so many of us live in the virtual box called a tv and are so much told how to feel we forget that real emotions are not predictable and can alter our judgement and perspective on things. I agree with the person above I got my money's worth and then some.
Best movie I've seen in a long time. Real thought-provoking interaction among characters with a real plot and theme(s).
Some person with limited perspectives wanted to know if white people were vilified in the movie. So trivial to think that because black people are involved with whites in a movie by blacks that the focus is race.
The title speaks volumes...it's about family. I plan to see it again real soon.
I saw this last night and it was THE BOMB!!!!!!!! TP has outdone himself and in my opinion, this is the best one yet. I want to see it again. And I\'ll PAY to see it again. It will have you rollin\', it will piss you off, it will make you CHEER and yell at the screen. And that Sanaa Lathan played the hell out of this part. She rocked it. Heck, they all did. Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!!! Go head on, Tyler!
All TP movies are interactive experiences and this was no exception.
I don\'t think it\'s possible that this writer was watching the same movie.
You are SO wrong! This movie was one of Perry's best works to date. You go through so many emotions while watching this and I will definitely be seing this again.
Obviously, you didn\'t see the same movie I saw. This was Tyler Perry\'s best work to date! A well crafted script, plotting and pacing, along with some of the industries hottest old and new actors made Preys simply fantastic. Tyler Perry knows emotions and he knows how to bring the punch at the best time. (Literally in this movie) LOL! As usual, the messages in this movie hit home. Tyler Perry is a genius at his craft. YOU BETTA ASK SOMEBODY!
The movie was excellent. What more could you ask for in a PG-13 movie. I am glad to see someone able to produce a movie with an adult theme without the soft-porn sex scenes and jail house language. Job Well Done.
IT WAS GREAT. I'LL PAY TO SEE IT AGAIN, AND AGAIN. Thank you Tyler Perry for having 2 of my most favorite actresses looking so glamorous -- Alfre and Kathy. I have always admired their work, and I always will. Hollywood has only shown them as ugly and un-glamorous, but you, Tyler, brought out their beauty as well as ability. Don't get me wrong, those 2 ladies always delivered and excuted any acting parts that Hollywood gave them. And Tyler I also thank you for showing the talent of the other young ladies and gentelmen in this movie. You are giving them the opportunity to prove that they can rise up to the level of a "Woodard" and a "Bates". Only you would do that. Thank you, Tyler Perry. I will always get out to see your plays and movies and I will suggest that my friends and relatives do the same. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
Hollywood doesn’t like anything or anybody that it can not control. It's long ignored the black community and now that black writers, directors, producers, actors are going out on their own to make films on the things that we have experience the movie critics want to belittle their achievements with suggestions that blacks can't be anything but pimps, prostitutes, addicts and let's not forget thugs! This film is very, very good and yes these things do happen and yes not only in Hollywood but historically through out America and yes we know all about your dirty laundry after all we were once the ones forced to clean your filthy sheets!
Seems like the concensus on this message board is: "This move was AWESOME!" Not sure what move the reviewer above went to see, but TP scored once again!
I saw the movie yesterday. I really really like this film. Yes, Alfre and Kathy played excellent roles. I would have loved to see more of them in the movie. I do not think their friendship was unlikely but really the norm. In fact, I have alot of friends that have money and "Lord knows, I don't"! But I will have money someday, and what I love about Tyler Perry, is that he is the true example of the American Dream. That we can still work really hard and be successful, even in the Good old boy world of show business. Go see it, you'll love it. You can not listen to the reviews of the so called experts, didn't they say "American beauty" was a good movie.
I am sick of the bad reviews on this movie. It really doesnt have any more drawn out parts than any other movie put out there and yet people seem to not be able to appreciate that fact...they did not get cussed out, it kept their attention, the actors did great jobs, and it did not certainly prove to be a low budget film. If you sit back and expect to see a movie and throw all your critical eyes away im sure you will see something you will enjoy.
It always amazes me about the reviews of TP's movies. Its almost as if the reviewers are just out to say, regardless of what they see, that its a bad movie. Now, i know that from seeing his plays thatTyler Perry is not about writing what people EXPECT to see, but more of what they actually see and endure in there regular day lives. Too many movie reviews seem like they have preconcieved thougths about where the movie SHOULD go and get upset when its not taken in that direction
Now i could say that "only african americans can get it and if your not black then you wouldnt understand" but thats not the case in this movie. How many people have seen someone literally try and screw there way tot he top. IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME. How many people have seen friendships like that of Alfre and Kathy, kinda unlikely but yet its still hjappens, look at some of you mothers older friends. Blind love, everywhere. Cheating and infidelity, need i say more.
In the end, you have to see it for yourself. These reviews never do the movies any justice. Every movie that comes out is not meant to be an oscar calibur movie, some movies just want to get a point across and actually relate to the audiences watching it and this one gets it done. Hands down. if you go with friends i guarantee a discussion will ensue long after the movie is over.
I saw the movie on Friday and really enjoyed it. I do not pay any attention to the review in my local paper. This particular paper do not give any of the Black films a good rating. I was not disappointed in the movie. I thought it was well done and as I have done with all your other plays and films, when this become available to purchase, I will purchase it legally.
Is there anything published on one of the first plays you did, I think, it was "I kow I've Been Change." or something like that. I haven't been able to find it.
This is one of your best Films. It hit me the hardest d/t I'm going through the same thing with my family dear sister and her lover. she have given up to believe that this man will leave his wife for her. TP never stop being you cont to hit points that hitting these reviewers home place. You are the best going to see the movie again
I ALSO AGREE THAT THIS FILM WAS CAPTIVATING FROM THE BEGINNING UNTIL THE VERY END. MY HUSBAND AND I SEEN IT ON OPENING DAY. WE BOTH ENJOYED IT AND FELT IT WAS HIS BEST WORK THUSFAR. I HONESTLY FELT LIKE I WAS AMONG THE CHARACTERS AS THEY EACH ACTED OUT THEIR PARTS. IT WAS BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN AND PORTRAYED BY THE QUALITY WHITE AND BLACK ACTORS IN THIS MOVIE. TYLER PERRY DESERVES HIS ACCOLADES, STOP HATING ON HIM! BESIDES, I DO NOT BELIEVE THE WRITER EVEN SEEN THE MOVIE BECAUSE JENNIFER HUDSON WASN\'T IN THE MOVIE I SEEN FRIDAY BUT HER NAME IS AMONG THE CAST MEMBERS LISTED ABOVE...OR DID I MISS SOMETHING. THE FAMILY THAT PREYS, IS A MOVIE WORTH SEEING AND THEN BUYING ON DVD WHEN IT IS RELEASED.
Sorry, I have to agree with the reviewer...and I can\'t believe how so many people are applauding this shoddy attempt at a soap opera movie. The plot was predictable, the story lines did not gel together at all, Sanaa Lathan\'s husband\'s character was unrealistically clueless, and overall this movie lacked hugely in depth . It was like watching \"Thelma and Louise\" meets \"Dallas\" meets \"All My Children\". Yawn... I do however, applaud Tyler Perry\'s efforts of casting major white characters in this movie to hopefully encompass a broader audience...I just wish he\'d write a storyline worth the actor\'s time and get pass all of the \"stage play\" drama.
All I can say is that, hollywood can be spelled with a lower case letter now, because he feels threaten. Sorry guys, but that what it looks like. Tyler Perry is a one man monster compared to your army and you still can't win. Work hard hollywood and join the banwagon before you capture a different side of this thing, called success, bcause Tyler's movie this time is setting the stage for future talent and accomplishments that you may not be able to compete with. Geat ready!
This movie was TP\'s best by far. Each one of his movies get better and better. I find myself waiting for his next one. You can see his growth in each movie and he keeps the scenes clean (no porn) and still gets his point over. As Martin would say, \"You Go Boy\"!
This movie was excellent. I have seen all of Tyler Perry\'s Plays and Movies. It\'s great to see issues being addressed that exist in real life situations. It\'s wonderful to know that it matters not where you start it matters where you finish. One thing I love about Tyler is that he keeps it real in all of his works.
Tyler Perry I think this movie is a sample of what will be coming in the future and Hollywood realizes that you are serious and they will have to take you seriously.
I felt that this film touched several dimensions of african-american life...many critics who trash it are far too disassociated from the issues illustrated in the film to truly appreciate it. It\'s cool though, because outside of the \"euro\" paradigm I really connected with the film. I just think that it had too many dimensions for the mono-lens status quo to truly understand.
THE MOVIE WAS PRETTY GOOD, ME AND HUBBY ENJOYED IT, IT WAS WORTH THE MONEY. THE MOVIE HAD MY ATTENTION ALL THE WAY THREW, I COULD\'NT EVEN GO 2 THE CONCESSION STAND, CAUSE I DIDNT WANT TO MISS A BEAT. VERY PLEASED WITH THE MOVIE, WILL BUY DVD WHEN RELEASES.
