We’ve been talking about Robert Rodriguez as the producer of Red Sonja, but the latest scoop from Comic Con is that he’ll actually be serving as co-director, alongside the guy officially credited as director, Douglas Aarniokoski. Apparently the reason for the covert operations is that Aarniokoski is a member of the DGA, and therefore a co-director can’t be credited. I’m not up on my DGA bylaws, but I suppose that’s a legitimate reason.
Red Sonja, if you need a refresher, will be a movie based on a female character from the Conan the Barbarian comic books. Rose McGowan, Rodriguez’s girlfriend and Grindhouse star, is set to play the role. Rodriguez describes it this way: “Rose is a pistol. She's whip-smart, has attitude to burn, is sexy, extremely strong, yet has a vulnerable side that would surprise her closest friends. That description also fits Red Sonja."
That’s the latest from the Cinema Blend team on the floor at Comic Con. The updates are coming fast and furious, so keep checking back here to find out what you and I both are missing by not being in San Diego.
